Norway's eATA carnet pilot marks its first round-trip, duty-free journey

Norwegian goods needed for an energy fair in Germany breezed through the Oslo Harbour Customs office this week, thanks to the help of the eATA carnet pilot.

Managed by ICC, the digital carnet pilot, which offers temporary relief from import duty, was issued by the Oslo Chamber of Commerce. "This will make the whole ATA Carnet process so much more efficient, secure and more sustainable," said the Oslo Chamber. Customs officials on the ground were equally thrilled, saying, "It was so much quicker than we had expected!"

WATAC Chair Ruedi Bolliger said: “With ICC ATA Gateway, any ATA Carnet issuing association will have the ability to digitally issue ATA Carnets at a margin of the cost and track their issued Carnets within a dedicated digital database. In providing access for all to this digital issuing tool, including those chambers and business associations ICC is paving the way to fully digitalize the ATA Carnet.”

ICC Director of Global Partnerships and Development Julian Kassum said: “At ICC, our mission is to make business work for everyone, every day, everywhere. That is why our eATA Carnet efforts are designed to help individuals and organizations get business done faster and easier. By bringing digitalization and convenience into international shipping, ICC underlines its commitment to digitalize trade for the 21st century and reduce the private and public sector’s dependency on paper-based processes.”
